Our Roots & History
1988/ The Humble Beginning
Founding Meeting in Salyersville
On September 4, 1988, four men came together with a shared vision: to establish a church where Jesus would be at the center and where faith, service, fellowship, and love for the community could flourish.
From that vision, Lakefront Church of God was born.
The church was established by Larry Patrick, Von Elam, Corbett Stephens, and Menifee Patrick. From the very beginning, Larry Patrick was appointed to serve as pastor—a calling he has faithfully continued to fulfill throughout the church’s history.
The church first met on Johnson Fork off the Mountain Parkway in Salyersville, located in front of Reed PayLake. It was from that location that the name “Lakefront Church of God” was chosen—a name that has remained with the congregation throughout its history and has become part of its identity in the community.
2011/Purchase of the former Middle Fork Elementary School
New Beginnings
What began with the faith and determination of a small group grew into a lasting ministry.
Through changing seasons, generations, celebrations, hardships, and countless Sunday services, the mission remained the same: to worship God, share the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and serve others.
As Lakefront continued to grow, another important chapter began in 2011, when the church purchased the former Middle Fork Elementary School from the Magoffin County Board of Education. The property provided new opportunities for worship, fellowship, outreach, and future growth while giving the congregation a place in which to continue the ministry that had begun more than two decades earlier.
2023/New Sanctuary
New Building, Same Jesus
Years of faith and growth eventually led to another defining moment.
On July 23, 2023, Lakefront Church of God celebrated the dedication of its new sanctuary, with Rev. Donnie R. Hall conducting the dedication. The occasion represented far more than the completion of a building. It stood as a visible reminder of God’s faithfulness and of the sacrifices, prayers, work, and devotion of the people who had carried Lakefront’s ministry forward.
Today/ Growth and New Horizons
Preparing the Future Generations
Today, Lakefront Church Of God holds weekly worship services, youth activities, bible studies, and other outreach programs, with a congregation of 100+ members, there's always room for you! Today, the story that began on September 4, 1988, continues.
Pastor Larry Patrick, one of Lakefront’s original founders, continues to lead the congregation he helped establish—a remarkable thread connecting the church’s earliest days with its ministry today.
The buildings have changed. The congregation has grown. New generations have walked through the doors. Children have grown into adults, families have worshiped together, prayers have been answered, lives have been changed, and loved ones who helped build the church have gone on to their eternal reward.
But the foundation remains.
It is the same foundation upon which Lakefront Church of God was established in 1988:
Faith in God.
Love for people.
Service to the community.
And the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
As Lakefront Church of God celebrates another anniversary, we remember with gratitude those who came before us, give thanks for those who continue the work today, and look with faith toward those who will carry the ministry into tomorrow.
The history of Lakefront is not simply measured in years, buildings, or milestones. It is measured in lives touched for Christ.
And by God’s grace, the story continues.
